How to Check Your Skin for Abnormalities
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States—affecting one in five Americans in their lifetime. With such shockingly high statistics, it is important to check your skin regularly for any abnormalities as early detection is your best defense against skin cancer. Follow these tips outlined below to help you properly perform a self-exam.
Use Multiple Mirrors for a Thorough Examination
It is advised to use both a full-length mirror and a hand-held mirror when performing a self-examination. Full-length mirrors allow you to check the front and back of your body as well as your trunk while a hand mirror can help you to see hard-to-reach places that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Check Every Nook and Cranny
There are many places on your body that you don’t look at or see on a regular basis that can be affected by skin cancer. When performing your skin check, be sure give the following spots a thorough lookover:
- Your underarms
- Between your toes and fingers
- The soles of your feet
- Behind your knees
- Your neck
- Your scalp
- Your back
- Your buttocks
Watch Your Moles for Changes
It is important to monitor your moles and spots on your skin for any abnormalities or changes. Remember the ABCDE’s of melanoma when looking over your body:
- Asymmetry in the mole.
- Irregularly shaped or poorly-defined border.
- Variations in color. Colors may include black, tan, dark brown, and even white, red, or blue.
- A diameter that is greater than the size of a pencil eraser.
- A spot that evolves, changing in shape or size over time.
If you notice any suspicious spots on your skin that change in color, texture or becomes itchy or painful—it is advised that you make an appointment with your dermatologist to determine what it is.
